This October, Days for Girls held a virtual panel discussion on women's empowerment, menstrual health and the importance of period product choice — co-hosted by UNFPA, MIET Africa and South Africa Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities. Now, the full video replay is available for viewing!
Webinar: MHH & The Power Of Product Choice
The webinar explores the topic of menstrual autonomy through a human rights lens. It follows the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) passing a new standard for washable, reusable towels in South Africa — and aims to highlight the myriad benefits of choosing SABS-certified reusable solutions over disposables.
In the 90-minute discussion, nine esteemed panelists draw on field research, case studies and personal testimonials to make a case for the power of product choice. They also address key considerations like:
-
Why menstruator dignity and bodily autonomy depends on access to product diversity and preference
-
The health, safety and environmental advantages of reusable period products
-
The importance of timely, gender-inclusive menstrual health education
-
The importance of WASH facility access in managing menstruation (especially in schools)
Every single menstruator has a basic human right to menstrual, sexual and reproductive health; this is a key pillar of gender equity, and is critical to achieving the SDGs. But managing menstruation is not one-size fits all. Watch the video recording for expert insights into addressing this complex issue for the benefit of all people with periods.
